Anything a blanket is capable of it is and more. Like those blanket sock things you see on the infomercials. You could put it on and it would be like a blanket over you that you could move around in. Would work for sporting events, anything outdoors really, you could take it with you to the fourth of july fireworks.

Your fancy uniform (the suit), you keep, as you have to buy it anyway, after your first year. But combats and such are all returned.

When I was in the Signal Regiment, we had a Sergeant retire. He had been issued a watch, as he did not own one. When he retired, he had to even give the watch back! We used to say that the Army was the only place you drove with your lights on in the daytime, off at night, and they took your watch away when you retire!

I hvae decided it is about to time to be more prepared for emergencies. So I have compiled a list of things that I am going to include in my emergency go-bag or oh shit bag. I am in the Army and I was an Eagle Scout, so I am pretty good at survival type scenarios. The following items are what I plan to include; some of them may seem silly, but I have my reasons for each. Please let me know if there is anything else I should include, or any feedback. Thanks
The list…
First aid kit
Flashlight (2X) with extra batteries
Emergency radio with extra batteries
Non-parashable food (cliff bars)
Rain poncho (2X)
Two-toned ground tarp
550 cord (at least 100 feet)
Carabiners
Bungee cords
Pocket knife
Survival knife
Multi-tool
Camp axe
Blade sharpener
Bottles of water
Hard plastic bottle
Metal cup (for boiling water)
Claw hammer
Heavy gloves
Baby wipes
Go towels
Survival saw
50 dollars cash
Extra IDs
Waterproof matches
Lighter
Flint/steel/magnesium bar
Compass
Change of socks/boxers
Jacket
Beanie
Duct tape
WD-40
Space blanket
Whistle
Insect repellant
Trash bags (large black type)
Ziplock bags
Paper/ sharpie
Toilet paper

I know this list is long, but I want to be able to use this bag in virtually any situation. Anything else I should include? Or any feedback? Thanks.

More money, in small denominations. Firearm and extra ammo.

I know a lot of people don’t agree with what I carry with me but keep the negative comments to yourself.I laid out all my gear and asked myself do I need this?I took a few things out.

So my bag is still the 3 day assault pack.

Cutting tool:KaBar USMC utility knife,Victorinox multi tool which has 2 knives,saw,can/bottle opener, scissors, tweezers, tooth pick, file, cork screw.Pocket wire saw that I might take out.
Cordage:about 200 ft of para cord including my boot laces and para cord bracelet I wear.10 ft of 25 pound fishing line. And a small amount of thread. Also 2 strips of duct tape.
Container:Canteen/cook cup,stainless steel bottle,garbage bag.
Cover:the same garbage bag, poncho top and cover.
Combustion device:Matches in water proof tube with cotton inside for tinder.Magnesium fire starter.
Food:4 MRE crackers,2 oatmeal packets,energy bar,2 sugar packets,2 salt packets.
Clothes in zip lock bags:watch cap, shemagh, bandanna, wool socks, and a long sleeve cotton shirt I will be replacing with a polyester shirt soon.I also wear a fleece jacket and composite steel toe boots which are lighter than regular steel.
Misc:tooth brush with the handle cut down to save room, small rag,1 nail,SURVIVAL Army FM21.Head lamp.
First aid:5 Q tips,9 alcohol pads,small bandages,Neosporine,aspirin,the same thread and a needle.
Fishing kit:2 hooks and the same fishing line plus the inner core of para cord.

Just so you understand what I use this bag for,I hunt and camp in the deep woods around my grandfather’s home. There is no marked trails,no guides that go with us.I have found snake skin and seen wolves plenty of times and I know there is more dangerous animals than that out there.I always take a rifle with me when I go and if someone goes with me they usually do too and maybe a 357 magnum revolver.Yes we have hunting/fishing liscences and even gun carry permits so were not just hillbillies in the woods. Please let me know what you would take out or add and how I can improve my pack even more. Also I try to fit all the little things in my stainless steel bottle to save room. Also a signal mirror.I will probably get a whistle too.I attach my sleeping bag to the bottom of my pack before I leave too.
@ casey
I said composite steel toe boots. It is much lighter than metal but just as strong. It is made out of some kind of extremely tough plastic. They have saved me from having a broken foot more than once.
@ Cody

My multi tool does have all these things.I thought I put that in the list. Its a Victorinox swiss army multi tool and it has 2 very sharp blades,a wood saw,a pair of scissors,a file, tweezers, tooth pick,a cork screw,a bottle opener and can opener, and a flat head screw driver. It is an older model. Also I do carry a compass.
@ Garrick
I use different rifles depending on what I’m hunting. When I hunt deer,I use a Remington 710 7mm magnum that holds 3 rounds in the clip and has a decent Nikon scope on it.When I hunt small game I will take a 17 HMR or 10/22 Ruger.I see a rifle as something that I would need in the woods because if I get in a stand off with a big animal,I’m not throwing a rock at it or using bear mace.I will brag and say I never miss and am a dead eye with all my rifles and rarely miss with revolvers.I know if I’m face to face with a bear or buck I take the shot in the sniper’s shot which is where the spinal cord connects to the head and it drops right there instead of getting pissed off and charging at me.Everybody has their own opinion and almost everyone says they would lose the KaBar but it is my hatchet,my saw,my flint/magnesium sparker,it is only a 60 dollar knife and it is my favorite knife and everything but I would rather use it up first and buy another one later because it is so cheap
EDIT: sniper’s *SPOT not shot.

you might wanna get a torch lighter, some alternative tinder, maybe a little improvised accelerant like hand sanitizer, a cheap knife for the magnesium bar. look into bivy bags and shelters. anything an ultralight backpacker might use could be useful.

First off I changed my bag.I got a MOLLE ll 3 day assault pack in Army camo.It has several MOLLEs on the bag along with 6 buckles on the sides to hold more gear.I did some research and it is supposedly water proof but I wouldn’t put too much faith in that so I have a garbage bag in the outer pocket in case of rain.It has a chest and waist belt to help support the weight evenly.I put a utility pouch on the side and inside of the pouch is a couple of packs of MRE crackers,2 instant oatmeal packs,a poncho top, small multi tool, and a magnesium fire starter. In the main compartment I have a long sleeve shirt 100% cotton and a watch cap in a zip lock bag.In another zip lock bag I have a pair of wool socks and a shemagh.I have my KaBar USMC fighting/utility knife in a waterproof sheath,my canteen with cook cup in a Vietnam era cover.A MOLLE pouch with about 200 foot of para cord,a water proof match tube, and some thread in a water proof capsule.I have a stainless steel bottle with a small rag,a nail,3 zip ties,a napkin,a small bottle with first aid stuff in it,a small toothbrush, and about 2 feet of para cord in it.Also in the main compartment I have a jungle camo boonie with para cord weaved through the MOLLEs on the rim of it.I have a small head lamp in there too. There is a smaller compartment that I keep my Army SURVIVAL field manual in a zip lock bag in.I keep 2 strips of duct tape folded up in there and a small pocket saw.I keep a bandana in the outside pocket of the bag that is closest to my back for a little added comfort to my back. Also inside the smaller compartment I have a few MRE coffee packets and sugar packets.I can attach my sleeping bag to the bag easily also.I use to have much more extra stuff in another pack but I cut back on my gear to make it lighter and make more room.I am very happy with this set up I wanted to get some opinions from some of you and what you keep in your packs. And Chris, please don’t post the link to that check list site,I disagree with a few things on there.
A few good answers and a couple of people who are quick to judge.I never said anything about zombies. As for the bag itself,I love it,not because it "looks cool" but because it has several pockets and is easy to get what I need from it quickly.I forgot to mention I carry a small compass. As for the KaBar I would not go into the woods without it around here because the woods I hunt and camp in are very thick with thorns and other sh*t that you get tangled in.I don’t even know of any marked trails around my area.My grandfather, cousins, brothers and I have been hunting in the woods behind my grandfather’s house for as long as I can remember.I forgot about the negatives of cotton,I was a welder for a few years and you didn’t want to wear anything but 100% wool or cotton when welding. Thanks for reminding me of the negatives of taking that.I buy my gear at an Army store close to my house because it is a small business, low prices, good gear and I know the owner pretty well. Not because I want to p
lay army men.

I have to ask, what kind of emergency are you preparing for?
When do you predict a breakdown in society will occur that will force you from your home and head to the hills?
I am all for being prepared when you head to the woods, but why prepare for the worse when you are on a three hour day hike on a marked trail?
Survival means different things depending where you are trying to survive. In the dry heat of the Southwest, staying hydrated is the biggest problem. At high elevations, coping with cold temps and at times wildly fluctuating weather conditions. Shelter, staying dry, and keeping warm are more important.
A member of the family once told me it would be pretty poor planning if I did not have matches and/or a lighter available to start a fire.
As to your survival bag, ditch the 100% cotton garments. Wool or synthetic is much better at controlling moisture. I would carry at least two pairs of wool socks. Powder the inside of the socks before storing them in the zip-loc bag.
What I see lacking is water purification device or chemicals, not much in the way of food, little means of carrying water, and not much in the way of cold weather clothing. No signaling or navigating devises. No plastic drop sheet or garbage bag. Plastic sheeting can be used for shelter to keep you dry. I pack two sets of spare re-chargeable batteries and a solar powered re-charger. I carry a small one battery flashlight along with a headlight. Both devises use the same size battery.
Again, I wonder what you are preparing for?
Good Luck

I have recently taken a few things out of my survival bag to drop some weight and make room in my bag.I pack it all in one backpack, put the backpack in a GI duffel bag with my sleeping bag.The contents of the backpack include:12 inch KaBar USMC in waterproof sheath,canteen/cook cup in green cover, zip lock bag with long sleeve shirt and pair of wool socks in it,mess kit with a few crackers,2 oatmeal packets,a little salt, sugar, stainless steel bottle, cheap regular size multi tool, small multi tool with mini flashlight, headlight, small led flashlight, about 150-200 ft of para cord,2 garbage bags, survival book Army field manual in zip lock bag,2 nails for shelter making, traps, etc.Small candle, pocket size fishing/sewing kit, signal mirror,a couple of small pocket knives, safety orange poncho,p-38 can opener,2 waterproof match boxes, flint magnesium firestarter,2 strips of duct tape, about 6 q tips, alcohol pads, neosporin, bandages, headache medicine, small rag, shemagh,OD green watch cap, leather welding gloves,3 zip ties, blue sleeping bag rolled up tight,it is all relatively light weight, mostly waterproof,my duffel bag has straps so I can wear it as a backpack,I know I could lose a lot of my gear but It fits and doesn’t take up too much room, what do you think?Constructive critism is welcome.

I am not sure what situation you are expecting to use this gear in but any time you can go lighter you are saving energy. Everything you do in a survival situation has to do with maintaining thus conserving energy and gaining energy.
Things I would loose off this list are: One of the multi tools and all of the pockets knifes. All you need is one good knife or multitool
-You only need one light source so choose one and bring extra batteries, Also get rid of the candle. I would rather have flint and steel than a candle.
- I might be able to understand one survival book but familiarizing yourself with the techniques in the book before hand is probably a better idea so learn the books and ditch both of them.
- I dont think you need traps, you can make traps from natural objects you find.
- I dont know why you need the leather welding gloves.
I think thats it, Interesting list though> What is this list for.

I am so ready to leave my husband, but I don’t want to break up my family and I also have no place to go…I am not going anywhere without Haley and I don’t really have anyone that I can stay with.

Any way, my husband barely helps me with anything at all…he helps sometimes when I ask for it, but only if I ask for it and hardly ever asks if there is anything he can help with. I work full time, go to school full time, our daughter is 13 months amongst all the many other things I handle on a day to day basis…I just can’t take it anymore. My husband and I were both just off for a week at Christmas, we were home the entire time, he did nothing until he finally got the wild idea to clean the garage…otherwise he did nothing but lay on the sofa watching tv. I kept asking him to hook his xbox up to the internet so we could get movies from netflix, big mistake, now he does nothing but play Call of Duty online all the time. He finally got off his duff the other day and hang the baby gate on our stairs after like the 4th time Haley crawled up them.

I’m always running errands, for groceries, toiletries or whatever else we need and yesterday I reminded him to pick up a card for his step moms birthday. Well he went to the army navy surplus store instead for a camoflauge rain poncho. I asked him about it today and he said, why didn’t you get one yesterday when you were at wal-mart. I said because I wasn’t thinking about it and I thought you were getting it. So then he asked me if I was getting it or if he needed to, so I asked him to and then he accused me of being a B$*&@ and told me I owed him $25 for getting my car washed.

I ask him to do one simple thing to help me out and he acts like I’ve screwed up his entire universe. I seriously can’t take this anymore. I don’t want our daughter growing up in a house like this…but I seriously don’t know what to do because I have no place to go…I don’t talk about this to any of my friends because I’m embarrassed about it…

What should I do?
Yep, funny thing is at the end of the card conversation he told me I’m a bad friend and I said you are a bad husband and he said, you’re are going to see me not be a husband anymore starting tonight and I said, and how is that any different from any other night…he never responded back.
Yeah, you’ve obviously never had a conversation with him. Everytime I try to sit down and talk to him when everything is calm, it gets turned around into how much I suck and he ends up telling me that if I don’t like it I can leave, so tell me how I’m being over dramatic!
Actually he slapped me a couple of weeks ago during an argument.
I have asked him to go to counseling before, but he tells me I am the one with the problem and I need the counseling, so now I’m thinking about telling him that unless he comes to counseling with me, I am leaving.
My mom stayed married to my dad for 26 years who was just as lazy as my husband and did nothing to help her and verbally abused her and it ended up killing her in the end. She died of heart disease from all the unnecessary worrying and anxiety…I don’t want to end up like her.
K – I "nagged" him about the card, because he is not grown up enough to remember to do things on his own. He’s always asking me to remind him of this or that…which is what I did. I used to have to wake him up every morning to make sure he wasn’t late for work…see the trend?
K – I am already going to counseling by myself, I went today actually and he said by all means we need to go together and I agree, I just can’t get him to see that…and PS, for once I actually liked your answer. When I first saw your name, I was like oh lord here we go. Thank you for being helpful!
That’s funny Alexia – because I actually had a chair massage this morning. However, my husbands aunt is a massage therapist and she gives me 1 hour massages for free…I might call her up this weekend. Thank you.
K- the respect is so long gone that I don’t remember a time when it was ever even there…everytime I go to him about anything he turns it around and makes it out to be my fault, he’s a great manipulator in that respect…so whenever I mention counseling he says the problem lies within me and that I am the one who needs counseling. I would like to say that I would be heartbroken if something happened to him, but the way I feel today, I just don’t know that that would be the case…I’m just over the petty crap i guess…I’m looking for something more than this.

Oh girlie, I am SO sorry that your husband is such a jerk!

He laid his hand(s) on you. Get out now. I told Andrew if he ever even laid so much as one hand on me out of anger, Id be gone!

Your Husband is a real jerk, seriously. There is no reasoning with him. He blames you for anything and everything that goes wrong. It is never going to change. Why not get out now while Haley is still young enough to not know what’s going on.

Consult an attorney, as the other user has suggested.. Surely you will get alimony & child support and that should be enough to get a nice little apartment for you & Haley.

If he touches you again, by all means.. call the police and press charges on the asshole!

I like to go camping, hiking, etc. in the woods sometimes.I pack all of the gear I take in a single backpack plus a sleeping bag and whatever I can carry on me.I carry at least 2 folding knives and a fixed USMC Ka Bar utility knife with me,a Army canteen with cook cup,a stainless steel bottle,a large shemagh for many uses,2 waterproof match tubes with tinder also,a flint/magnesium firestarter,a military issued watch cap,2 small compasses,an extra shirt, wool socks,p-38 and p-51 can openers,2 small multi tools,a head light and small led flashlight,at least 200 ft of paracord in different colors, mess kit with homemade MRE inside, first aid stuff, bandages,Tylenol,Benadryl,Neosporin.a sewing/fishing kit with hooks,SURVIVAL Army field manual, ranger bands, camo face paint, signal mirror, safety orange poncho and cover,1 razor for shaving,toothbrush,pen,sunglasses,rope,bandana,2 garbage bags, duct tape,2 nails, dental floss,6 handwarmers, leather welder’s gloves,American flag velcro patch on my bag,95% of my gear is in waterproof bags or is waterproof itself.the garbage bags would be to put my backpack in to keep it dry.All together it is pretty lighweight, and my backpack is comfortable to wear for long periods of time.I know our troops carry much more gear and it is much heavier than what I carry so I am unsure if I am carrying enough.Feel free to share what you take with you camping, and constructive critism is welcome.
@ J and Chris

most of my gear I could go without, but with the extra room in my backpack,I see no harm in putting in a few light weight creature comforts.I believe 2 knives is 1 knife because you can lose one in the woods easily. My first aid kit is very light weight, almost weighs nothing. The 2 nails can be used for shelter, fishing, etc.I don’t take any canned food with me so if anything the can openers would be for fishing lure.I think I will take the p-51 out because it is bigger and takes up more room.If you have ever done any kind of work out doors like cutting a tree down,or something similar, you would know how much easier gloves make it.And keep your hands warm (as for the comment about the hand warmers,I am taking four out).My home made MRE is virtually weight less and takes up no extra room because it fits in my mess kit.It consists of 4 crackers, instant oatmeal, and a couple of salt packets to help dry out meat if I kill something.I guess I kind of got carried away with it but ev
also I forgot to mention,if I am in an open area or by a lake or somewhere similar the signal mirror could come in handy. The razor, that is something no man should go without in my mind,my favorite creature comfort.

As I just stated in another QnA we are not under any kind of threat of an invasion or zombie apocalypse so a Bug out list like what your all carrying is a lot of wasted space filling junk. You only need 1 knife and 1 multi-tool. 1 compass or GPS, 1 fire-starter, 1 mess kit or cook cup, 1 rope or para-cord. You talk of a "homemade mre" well if it’s like most mre’s it’s too heavy of a food item switch to dehydrated foods. All the army stuff ie camo face paint arm bands and junk leave it behind you won’t need that. The army survival manual could be handy to give you ideas for shelter setup and food sources but there are better wildlife and edible plant books out there. All those hand warmers are wasted space if you have fire and gloves why bother.

To many folks are suckered into these wild survival man shows and think they can do the same, and you can. But most of the junk you see on tv is just that junk. When folks really go out to the wild-lands to enjoy God’s green earth they want a lot more of the creature comforts of home and for real outdoor adventurists who have been doing this for years with out all the hollywood makeup they don’t buy into all that phony baloney. Here is a back-packing check list from a reputable supplier prepared by folks who really spend more time in the outdoors then any survival man character ever has,

I teach 5th grade in an elementary school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Los Angeles had a big time riot in 1992, when I was fifteen. The riot was so bad, they skipped the National Guard and went straight to the Army 7th Division at Ft. Ord, and the Marine 1st Division at Camp Pendleton. That riot is the biggest reason why the Los Angeles Police Department shut down all the gun shops in Los Angeles. Before the riots, we had over 50 gun shops. Now Los Angeles has ONE within the City Limits. You see, all the Megagangs took over 90% of the gun shops and issued long and short arms and ammo to all members. Anyway, the riots had a BIG impression on me, a 15 year old boy. I was shocked. So ever since, I keep a gun in my car. Also, because I am a teacher, kids leave their backpacks at the end of the year. So I have three kid’s backpacks in the back of my car, with food, water, spare clothes, toilet paper, blankets, a poncho, etc. In case we have a riot or something. And a gun, and some some. Ammo. The gun is a Winchester 9422 .22 Magnum. It is basically a scaled down .30/30 chambered for the .22 Magnum bullet. What is special about the gun is that with the twist of one screw, the gun breaks down into two pieces. So in one of the backpacks, I have the gun in two pieces, wrapped in a towel, tied with a shoelace. On the floor of the back seat of my car, I have one of those $100 pistol safes. Just big enough to hold one pistol and a couple clips. In the safe, I have some .22 Magnum ammo, and the bolt and the screw to the rifle.
So, at lunch, I was going into the office to check my box, and then head to the lunch room, when the Principal asked me into her office. Saw a whole bunch of school cops (Los Angeles Unified School District has its own police force). Oh. Not good. Anyway I was called into the office. Imagine my surprise when I saw one of the cops holding my backpack, and the towel with the gun in two pieces on my principal’s desk. I parked in the school lot, but that doesn’t give them the right to go through my car.
Well, long story short, it appears a male teacher at my school apparently is into pornography of children. The district somehow determined this, and decided to raid his house, car, room at school, computer, everything. And so they decided to ALSO search MY stuff. I have no connection to this guy. I hate the guy. In fact we have feuded for years. He makes fun of my service in the Army (MOS57E) because he was in the infantry, he is southern and conservative, and calls me "son" and that drives me nuts….In short we hate each other, and have nothing to do with each other. So I kept trying to ask why I got searched when HE got searched. They just kept saying vague things like "Well we had to cover all the bases." and "Well, put it out there, so we had to make sure you were OK." I think they were trying to say that because I am gay, and I taught at the same school, it was a logical assumption that I would be involved in any perversion that was going on. Or something. I don’t think this guy was into gay pornography. He always liked having girls work in his room, and he always liked to talk to young girls. I never saw him interacting with boys. So I don’t see any connection between this guy and me, but apparently THEY did and some judge did. So they made me open the safe with the bullets and the bolt and the screw. Then they told me I was in big trouble for having a gun on campus. I said the gun was taken down into pieces and if they could put it together THEN I was in big trouble. Apparently they didn’t connect that the bolt and screw went with my gun. The School Police sergeant messed with the rifle for a about a half minute, and then concluded that it was probably no hazard. They then asked to see my laptop. I bring my laptop to school because we use this thing teaching now called an ELMO. You can project whatever you want only the board. We project the math lesson from a laptop to the whiteboard to show graphics to teach the lesson. The guy asked if I had any pornography on my computer. I said "Yes." (Well it’s true) but what I have is all beefcake of big strong weigh lifting guys who are all obviously adults. I showed him. It was hidden on the computer. No kids. I assumed that I was going to be leaving in handcuffs. So I waited by myself in the empty Nurse’s office for about an hour. The Cop came in and said that because I "Was Honest,’ and "Came clean," with them they weren’t going to arrest me. The principal just gave me a memo to not bring a gun in my car if I were to park on on school property, and to not bring a laptop to school with any porn on it. Well, OK. But I still don’t think they had the right to search MY vehicle if they were going after some guy with child pornography, just because I happen to be gay.
PS. If it’s too long, don’t read it. No one is holding a gun to your head.
Jeff: Wrong. The law was 1000 feet of a school and the law was ruled unfair; it meant people who lived across the street from a school could not own guns.
I think they knew there was no connection between this guy and me, and that they knew the search would never hold up in court.
Winobot

Well what was the reason? A guy at my school was into child pornography, and therefore because I was gay, I was involved? That is not a reason to search my car.
Winobot

I have taken a look at my contract. I have a very strong Union (United Teachers Los Angeles). It has no mention of me waiving my 4th Amendment rights.
Rooster Pickens

Yes, in Los Angeles, your probation is three years, and after that you are "permanent" and tenured. Apparently the school police can buy universal lock picks for cars. The Car Companies sell them to cops.
To use the graphics which our new math program has and project it on the wall with an Elmo you need a laptop. Which the district DOES NOT provide. Sort of an unfunded mandate
It is my personal computer. I don’t feel a bit bad about having MY stuff on it. You need it to fully implement the math program, and the district is too cheap to buy us one.
Corey H

Wrong:

In the Gun Free School Zones Act of 1994, Congress made it a federal offense "for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone." 18 U.S.C. § 922(q)(1)(A) (1988 ed., Supp. V). The Act neither regulates a commercial activity nor contains a requirement that the possession be connected in any way to interstate commerce. We hold that the Act exceeds the authority of Congress "[t]o regulate Commerce . . . among the several States . .

The search is improper, if not illegal. There is no probable cause to search your car. The search seems to be based more on your sexual orientation than any real reason to suspect you of possessing child porn. You may actually have grounds for a discrimination law suit.
